Red Rock Canyon is super close to Las Vegas. Only 30 minutes by car, so it’s an easy day trip – or even just an amazing place to get to for that magic hour before sunset and click away to your heart’s content.
You’ll find breathtaking views and a wide variety of activities for everyone, and if you don’t have your own car, you can rent one, or jump on a tour to come out here and get away from the crazy Strip and amongst nature for a few hours. I’ve added some links to top tours below.
I love the canyon’s stunning red rock formations in the midst of the expansive desert landscape. Families will find plenty to do, from hiking trails suited to all ages, to exciting rock climbing and bouldering or just come for a picnic or some evening star gazing.

There are picnic areas and wildlife-watching opportunities dotted around the park, so bring your snacks and some drinks (water is essential!).
You’ll enter from the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center, where you’ll buy your National Park Pass (if you plan to see more than three national parks in a year, the annual pass is the best value). Here you’ll find educational exhibits for kids and adults.

Scenic Drive Through Red Rock Canyon
Driving through Red Rock Canyon is an unforgettable 13-mile experience with stunning landscapes at every turn.
The loop road winds through dramatic red rock formations and desert vistas, presenting numerous viewpoints perfect for photo opportunities, and yes you can stop and get out, go for a little hike or stroll, and return to the car with amazing photos to wow your friends.
Key stops include Calico Hills, High Point Overlook, and Red Rock Wash Overlook, each providing unique perspectives of the canyon’s beauty.
Driving carefully on this one-way road is essential, as wildlife often crosses unexpectedly. Keep an eye out for wild burros, desert tortoises – and even the occasional tarantula, which you wouldn’t want to squish!
The speed limit is generally low, allowing for safe and leisurely viewing of the natural surroundings. Stay on marked paths and pull over only at designated areas to protect the environment and your safety.
Hiking Trails for All Ages
Red Rock Canyon offers a range of hiking trails for all ages. Calico Tanks is a popular choice, offering a moderate 2.5-mile round trip. It features colorful rock formations and a hidden water tank.
For an easier hike, Lost Creek Children’s Discovery Trail is ideal. It is a short 0.7-mile loop that takes you through a desert wash, a seasonal waterfall, and a petroglyph wall. The trail is great for kids, with plenty of opportunities to explore.
In like manner, the Willow Springs Loop is another family-friendly trail, spanning 1.5 miles with diverse desert landscapes.

We added Red Rock onto our four-day Nevada road trip, so we stayed at Red Rock Casino and Resort. We don’t actually play the tables, but the resort was great for so many dining options and a lovely pool.
How to Get to Red Rock Canyon

If you don’t have a car, or don’t want to rent one, you can take a tour with a hotel pick up from Las Vegas. There are several red Rock Canyon tours to choose from. Here are a few I like:
Private Guided Tour with pick up. 2 hours.
Red Rock Canyon Heli Tour. For something very different, and to see this desertscape from the air, this tour lands at the Canyon for a glass of champagne at sunset, then fly back with amazing views of the Las Vegas Strip. (Proposal anyone?!) 3 hours.
Ebike Ride through Red Rock. This tour includes a pick up in Las Vegas to collect the bikes, then off you go at your leisure.
